Our RON (Remain Over Night) accommodations in Swaziland were at the Royal Swaziland Hotel, a quite posh property, with the “Royal” signifying that this was the casino-driven King’s personal playpen. Great grounds, an inviting swimming pool, and despite the triple figure tariff that’s shown, the Royal Swazi was really not that expensive. Continuing on Highway xxx the next morning, we arrived in Zululand, another “native” facility where we were each assigned to our own up-on-stilts tree house. To our surprise, these elevated hutments were connected by wide asphalt walkways – no mud on us but the “Be observant! Wildlife present!” signs along all walkways were a bit unnerving. The Tree Houses being located adjacent to Umfolozi Park, we looked forward to doing the Land Rover game run thing again and unlike Kenya or Tanzania, our driver-guide was permitted to go off the trail and into the bush at all times. This put our vans uptight to all wildlife – rhinos, giraffes, etc. - that ignored our very close presence in the complete absence of all predators (There were no big cats in Umfolozi!) Two bonuses: a panoramic, four-direction view of the jungle from a major overlook and our first spotting of the last of the Big Five, the Cape Buffalo (Lower far right). |
