To
understand the Tradition Fellowships that
are awarded to deserving students
by our Class of 1944, one must
go back to the very beginning when
President Andrew D. White addressed
the very first class of Cornellians
back in 1865 and was reported to
have told the assembled students, "You
are here to build a University."

And
that is just what they did for
both White and Ezra Cornell each
felt that labor was an important
element "to complete an otherwise
purely academic program." In
exchange for their labor, the University
forgave part of the cost of each
students education . . and
that practice has continued throughout
the ensuing years.
Put another way, its understood
that "The Tradition" continues
their vision of rewarding students
who work and who serve their communities
while obtaining an undergraduate
degree.
Established in 1982 through an
anonymous gift of $7 million, the Tradition
Fellowships now total more
than 600 each year with each recipient
demonstrating a significant work
experience, making meaningful contributions
to campus or community service,
and maintaining a high level of
academic achievement.
There
are all forms of help!
The "Cornell
Tradition" provides grants
that replace loans of up to
$4,000 each year - stipends
for summer internships - leadership
training and networking opportunities
- and, among other things,
a wage subsidy for working
on campus projects. In the
intervening period since 1982
the "Tradition" has
replaced more than $12 million
in loans. Upperclass students
must complete a minimum of
250 hours of paid work during
the academic year (200 hours
for freshmen) and 75 hours
of volunteer service or leadership
activities, either on or off
the campus. While this may
appear to be a substantial
commitment in time, most fellows
have had no problem meeting
the requirements.
During
the 1992-93 year, for example,
the fellows racked up an
average of 328 hours of work
and 168 hours of service
and, at the same time, exceeding
the 2.3 minimum GPA, with
an average GPA of 3.14. The
recipients come from all
sections of the United States,
and are enrolled in all seven
undergraduate colleges. They
represent all lifestyles,
ethnicities, interests, and
career choices. Ten of the Class
of 1944's Tradition Fellowships are
detailed below and from their
very brief "profiles" you
can readily determine that
were dealing with highly
motivated young men and women.
Each year, in one of our
Class mailings, the 44
head shed disseminates one
or more new "profiles" that
verify our continuing support
of this most worthwhile program.
