We also support Cornell! |
|
Im delighted to have been asked to byline this short piece describing an ongoing Cornell organization in which both my classmate and husband, Burl, and I are current members . . The story behind the Charter Society is an interesting one and a story in which very few are aware.
The Society was named in recognition of the Charter gift given by Ezra Cornell which was an essential aspect in the founding of Cornell University. The gift by our founder was $500,000.00 and his farm far above Cayugas waters. That gift, as you can well imagine, was, by any yardstick, a most substantial donation for any individual to make in the year 1865.
For the record, Charter Society members are those individuals who are recognized for their annual contributions to many aspects of the University and to do so at the $500-$999 level. These gifts enable Cornell to admit the best students, regardless of their finances, and to prepare them for a rapidly changing world. Without this generous private support from society members and other donors, Cornell would truly not be a world-class university.
I appreciate the opportunity thats been given me to participate in this Class Website project and to share a role with many others in bringing this to fruition. All of us eagerly look forward to the completion in the coming months.
